Every wildlife sighting submitted to NatureSpot will immediately add a dot to the county distribution map. You can view these maps on every page in our Species Library. Help us to plug the gaps - even common species are often under-recorded and more data is needed. More...
It is easy to send in a wildlife sighting - just use the Submit Records form on this website. You need to complete a registration form if you are not already set up as a user - but this is free and will only take a minute (be reassured that your details will remain confidential and 100% secure). Once registered click on the Submit Records link on the main menu above and you will be guided through a few simple steps to help you record the key details such as date and site name. To enter the grid reference you just click on a map! You can also submit a photo with you record if you have one.
Our Leicestershire and Rutland distribution maps combine NatureSpot records (red dots) with those submitted to the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) Gateway (green squares) so you see at a glance where a species has been recorded before. You will see that there are lots of gaps so please help to build the picture by submitting your wildlife sightings. Those from gardens are particularly useful because no-one else will visit these.
Remember if you are not sure what you've seen, just submit a photo through the Submit Records form and we'll help to identify it for you.
All the records submitted to NatureSpot are shared with the Leicestershire and Rutland Records Office and will eventually be submitted to NBN, helping to build up the national database of knowledge for each species. Your records are really important.... please help.
