Hi all,
Just wondering, do we have any confirmed populations of the Common Lizard/Slow Worm in (or more likely, around) Leicester city centre itself?
Also, to all the insect buffs out there, a few weeks ago I watched several staff from the Central Lending Library (new building) trying to handle, on a piece of tissue paper, what they assumed to be a queen wasp. This thing was massive and, once they'd finally dropped it on the pavement, I got a closer look at what I assumed could only be a queen hornet (it was breathtaking in size and very intimidating to look at, at least 4.5cm in length). After getting a clear picture, it flew off. Looking at the picture in detail, I realised it was definately unlike any social wasp I'd seen, no sting, much larger abdomen etc. The only thing it really resembled was a sawfly but most species are much smaller. Unable to find anything in the books, I finally found it online - an, apparently very rare, Giant Sawfly (Cimbex Connatus). The only other species I may have it confused with could be Cimbex Luteus.
For those who are interested, for more information, check out this site, its pretty good - there seems to be very little information on this species elsewhere:

Matt.
NatureSpot have now been able to get expert confirmation that this is indeed Cimbex Connatus and the picture has been added to our sawfly pages.
