Spiders, Harvestmen & Mites

Introduction

Whilst arachnids are numerous their identification is a challenge. There is currently no County Recorder for arachnids and limited local expertise.

Other Useful Websites and Publications

internet books
Eurospiders - high quality images of many species (not just British). Spiders of Britain and Northern Europe (Collins Field Guide)  - has detailed descriptions of just about all UK species and a technical key that allows identification to species level of all UK spiders except the 'money-spiders'.
Spiders of Europe - a very good site with a photo guide to families to help you find the right area. Harvestmen of the British Isles - one of the fold-out charts produced by the Field Studies Council - excellent value.
French/Belgian Arachnids - in French but with high quality images showing the male and female genital details needed for most identification. Harvestmen (Synopsis of the British Fauna) - though pricey (£29) this is THE book to get if you are serious about this group.
Harvestmen of Nottinghamshire - excellent photos and descriptions. Particularly useful as it is our neighbouring county with similar species.
The Harvestmen and Spider Recording Website has information, distribution maps and some images of UK species.

Recording Schemes

As with all records, any submissions you make to NatureSpot will be automatically forwarded to both local and national recording schemes.

Identification

Identification of many species requires examination of the specimen with a good lens or preferably a stereo microscope. Specimens found in VC55 can be sent away for identification - contact NatureSpot for details if interested.
