Last week we suggested a selection of books likely to appeal to NatureSpotters, so this week's suggestion is a more practical gift. A hand lens is an essential tool for all naturalists - don't leave home without one. Whether it's examining stamens or counting the hairs on the hind leg of a beetle, we all need a hand lens. Hopefully you wouldn't associate with anyone who goes out without a hand lens (and a few specimen pots in various pockets), but if you're anything like me, you may have a tendency to lose them, so a spare is always welcome. And it makes a mighty useful macro lens if you hold it in front of your phone camera so those records you submit are more likely to be accepted.
Of course, you may feel that gifts shouldn't necessarily be practical items, and you may be looking for something more original, so if you're not taken with the hand lens suggestion, how about some original wildlife-inspired art or jewellery by local artist Andy Mackay?
