About the Species Library
Our Species Library only includes wildlife species recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland (VC55) and only includes images taken in the two counties. Virtually none of the featured species are unique to VC55 so the library represents a good guide to the wildlife of the English Midlands and is representative of British wildlife in general.
New species are being added to the library all the time and we welcome contributions of images and information. The images selected are the best submitted through our Records Form. We try to include a few images for each species and particularly like to have images of males, females, juveniles, colour variants and other relevant life stages to illustrate the different forms that may be encountered.
The descriptive text, life history and status information is accurate to the best of our knowledge but we welcome corrections and additions. We would particularly appreciate identification guidance where there are similar species that could cause confusion.
In some cases, it is not possible to confirm the identity of a species from the image provided. Several species of insects for example need dissection to tell apart. In such cases we will include an image in the library if we believe it is likely to be that species but will highlight the uncertainty by placing the image in a red box and adding a caption to this effect.
The distribution maps are provided courtesy of the National Biodiversity Network (NBN) and more information about these can be seen on our map page.
