Description

This site was established as a nature area in 2017 following the development of the adjacent commercial units. A new permissive cycleway now crosses the site with a bridge over Rothley Brook to connect to the footpath and cycle way running along the old line of the  Leicester and Swannington Railway. This was one of England's first railways, being opened in 1832 to bring coal from collieries. There are also mown grass paths.

It links the path and cycleway through Optimus point and Kirby Road Ponds to a new cycleway off the old railway line going over to the border of Ratby and Groby and giving access into the National Forest. This cycleway roughly follows the line of a railway spur going to Groby and the stretch from the end of this new route can still be walked

Wildlife Highlights

The site is mainly grassland with some areas of planted trees and is part of the flood plain running alongside the Rothley Brook. The Brook supports a good range of wetland species, including Banded Demoiselle damselflies. Kingfisher is an occasional sighting. The grassland contains some interesting species, such as Great Burnet, Meadow Buttercup and Great Willowherb.
