    Getting There

    From the A1, exit into Great Casterton, and continue on Ryhall Road and then the A6121 into Essendine. The railway line runs to the west of the village.

    There is layby parking on Pickworth Road (that runs parallel to the railway line) by the pedestrian bridge, which is roughly in the middle of the site.

    Designated a Local Wildlife Site in 2003, Essendine Railway verges stretch for approximately 1 kilometer either side of the railway tracks, with an area of 1.1 hectares. The main habitats are mesotrophic grassland, calcareous grassland, and mixed grassland.

    Wildlife Highlights

    Recorded species include: Agrimony, Bulbous Buttercup, Burnet Saxifrage, Common Bird’s-foot Trefoil, Black Knapweed, Common Restharrow, Common Sorrel, Cowslip, Lady’s Bedstraw, Meadow Vetchling, Ox-eye Daisy, Red Clover, Greater Knapweed, and Hoary Plantain.

    In addition, Common Glow Worms (a Red Data Book species) have been recorded in the verge.
