The Rutland Water cycle path cuts through the woodland and this is best reached from Upper Hambleton village.

The wood is situated along the northern shoreline of the Hambleton peninsular. This is ancient woodland but much reduced in size due to construction of Rutland Water and now only covering around 6 ha. In the Middle Ages it was part of Barnsdale deer park. The wood is of the Ash-Hazel type and lies on on Upper Lias clay.
Ash Fraxinus excelsior, Pedunculate Oak Quercus robur, Sycamore Acer pseudoplatanus and Hazel Corylus avellana are the main constituents of the tree and shrub layers and some well-grown oaks are present. The field layer does not appear to be particularly species-rich, but includes Primrose Primula vulgaris, Moschatel Adoxa moschatellina, Wood-sorrel Oxalis acetosella and Wood Speedwell Veronica montana.
