Description

Whilst clearly not a road verge, this wildflower area was surveyed in 2020 by NatureSpot volunteers as part of the Urban Verges Trial run by the County Council. It has a similar objective of creating wildflower grassland from regularly mown grass and persuading the public to support this action.

The wildflower area lies between a group of trees and within the wider amenity parkland.

The survey showed that the grassland is dominated by tall Yorkshire-fog grass, though seven other grass species were found, including Marsh Foxtail, a species which prefers to grow in damp soil and suggesting that part of the site might be subjected to standing water  at some stage of the year. Four Local Wildlife Site (LWS) indicator species were present: Black Knapweed, Meadow Buttercup, Bulbous Buttercup and Common Sorrel.

Floral diversity: 17 species

LWS Indicator species: 4

Habitat Quality: Medium/High

Latest News

Mowing of the area will stop between April and August to allow the wildflowers and grasses to grow and flower. At the end of the season, the vegetation will be cut and then removed to limit nutrient build-up in the soil which encourages a wider range of species to thrive.
