City Nature Challenge 2019
This year the annual Leicester bioblitz is joining forces with the global City Nature Challenge initiative. Cities from all around the world are taking part to find out more about the wildlife on our doorsteps. Leicester is one of seven UK cities taking part. The event takes place from the 26th - 29th April when the public are invited to submit wildlife sightings from anywhere within the city boundaries. We are interested in all wildlife: birds, animals, insects, wildflowers, fungi, etc. You can record wildlife in your garden, a local park or on the way to the shops! We want to hear about your sightings of common species as well as anything more unusual that is seen.
Visit our events page, there are activities across the city to suit everyone!
Follow all the events: #CityNatureChallengeLeicester
You can also keep track of all the wildlife spotted by visiting the City Nature Challenge Leicester website. Each day you can come along to join guided walks, meet wildlife experts and help with the search for Leicester's wildlife!
It is easy to contribute your wildlife sightings:
- Sign up with NatureSpot, Leicestershire's very own wildlife guide and recording website.
- or download the iNaturalist app onto your mobile phone and simply use this to send in your sightings (see our 'how to' guide*). iNaturalist is also available online
- or keep your own list of anything you've spotted between the 26th and 29th April and email this to us before the 5th May. You can download a form here: for printing (pdf) or digital for emailing (Excel).
As a general rule, you will need to attach a photo with your record OR give the name of a known expert who identified the species for you.
* note that the iNaturalist project will only be available to log into from midnight 26th April to midnight 29th April but you can use the app anytime beforehand to practice using it.
Where to look for wildlife
The City Nature Challenge event covers ALL of Leicester so we would like to receive records of your wildlife sightings anywhere within the city boundary. This includes all Leicester gardens so if you are Leicester resident you don't even need to travel to take part! If you would like help in finding and identifying wildlife then come along to one of the events, alternatively why not visit one of Leicester's WILD PLACES featured on NatureSpot - just choose 'Leicester' in the district box to see a full list.
