Hello,

I found this hoverfly (?) at Cloud Wood nature reserve (near Breedon on the Hill) on the 20/7/15.  It's abdomen was very flat and it's wings tucked back over its abdomen which I haven't noticed before. Is it a common one that has just emerged so needs filling out a little or just one I haven't noticed before?

Thanks for your help with the ID

Hi

It's not a hoverfly - I think it's a soldierfly known as the Banded General (Stratiomys potamida) - you can check it out on the NatureSpot page in the Flies, Gnats and Midges section.
