A very tiny (2 or 3 mm) fly with distinctively patterned wings. There are other similar members in this family and detailed examination is necessary to arrive at a safe id.
This is a member of the Ephydridae or ‘shore flies’ which are found around seashores and the shores of inland lakes and ponds.
Thought to be all year round.
This appears to be the least common British species of Limnellia but the family may be under recorded and even unnoticed due to its very small size.
Rare or under recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland.
