Hi,  At first I  thought this was a crane fly but it has short legs.  As far as I'm aware they all have long legs, this being the reason they're called  'daddy long legs' in certain places.  Could it  have been in  fight and had it's legs bitten off or am I completely wrong in my assumption. It's about 50mm long.

Any help in identifying would be greatly received

    It's an Antlion (Myrmeleontidae).

Are you in the UK? We only have two species. European Antlion (Myrmeleon formicarius) on the Isle of Wight, and Suffolk Antlion (Euroleon nostras) in Suffolk and SE England coastal areas.
