When I registered a few weeks ago, it was suggested I only needed to record a species once a year.

However, is there any merit in recording, say hoverflies, to show how late/early in the year they are observed?

Yes, the national Hoverfly Recording Scheme (HRS) welcomes all records. If you submit them via natureSpot they will be picked up on iRecord and will inform both the County and national records.
