See pic. Is it the so called 'common' Coal Black? Found next to our back door in Warsash as per the pic - however it is much larger than I have read being well over 2 inches long - some 55 mm and estimated standing height probably over and inch. Pic shows as found (it's still there!).

Hi,

This site is only designed to handle records from Leicestershire and Rutland - I believe you are in Hampshire.

I'm not a beetle expert but to me your beetle looks like the stag beetle Lucanus cervus.  It would be a shame not to add a record to your county database - I think your local contact for beetles is JontyDenton@aol.com - perhaps he could confirm the species for you - it's one we don't get in Leicestershire.
