We have seen this raptor a couple of times but are not sure what it is. It is larger than a kestrel but can hover for a short while, although rather clumsily. We have also seen it hover and then stoop down into the field as if on to prey. We only get the outline as its against the sky but no sign of the forked tail like a kite - we gets lots of those.

Hard to say from these images but if it isn't a Red Kite (ie. no forked tail) then the next most likely candidate is a Buzzard. Look for the wings held in a shallow V as it soars.
