This is a black, shiny fungus which forms a crust.
The crust appears on dead Beech wood.
All year round
Quite uncommon in Britain.
Uncommon in Leicestershire and Rutland . May be under-recorded as Diatrype stigma is almost identical and is widely recorded on various woods, including Beech.
