A fairly small fly (5 or 6 mm) with a chestnut red thorax and black abdomen. The wing is partly infuscated (dark shading).
Larvae live under the bark of rotten wood.
Fairly frequent in the southern half of Britain.
Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
