Thallus green to green-brown, more greyish when dry, consisting of overlapping scales with ascending, sorediate tips; apothecia rare, black, discs pruinose.
On acid barked trees, fences and sheltered, siliceous rocks.

Widespread and fairly frequent in Britain.
