Lapwing - Vanellus vanellus


    Also known as the Peewit after its call, is smartly dressed with a green back, white front and black bib, wonderfully finished off with a crest. In flight it is easy to identify, appearing black and white with rounded wings, usually in large flocks.

    It is a farmland bird, seen mainly in fields.

    Life History

    They grub around in short grassland, arable fields and marshy areas searching for worms and insects to eat. They breed on the ground, often in agricultural fields.

    UK Status

    This bird has declined in numbers and is now a Red List species.

    Numbers have declined in Leicestershire and Rutland in recent years
