A foliose lichen. It has adpressed brown or brownish-green thallus with small overlapping lobes, the under-surface with simple rhizines. Isidia are solid, coralloid and often branched. Apothecia rare, with isidiate margins.
Melanohalea exasperatula has hollow isidia.

Found on nutrient-rich horizontal branches and twigs.
All year round.
Widespread in Britain.
Seems to be infrequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
