The fungus Neosetophoma samarorum produces very tiny black dots on the samara (keys) of Ash. Care is needed as another fungus, Diaporthe samaricola produces larger, more obvious black dots on these keys.

Winter and early spring.
Seems to be widespread in Britain, but is under recorded.
Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
