Nigrotipula nigra

Description

A dark brown cranefly with slightly shaded wings. Examination of a specimen is necessary to confirm identification of this species.

Associated with fen, peat and reeds.

June to August.

UK Status

Widespread but local in distribution.

VC55 Status

Rare in Leicestershire and Rutland. The Sapcote record of 20th July 2013 is the first confirmed record for VC55 although there was an unconfirmed note of a single specimen at Narborough Bog in the 1930s.
