Pamphilius varius

Description

Although quite attractive and distinctive in appearance there are similar yellow and black sawflies and expert examination is needed to confirm id.

The green-bodied larvae feed on Birch.

UK Status

Lack of records suggest that this species is infrequent in Britain.

VC55 Status

Rare in Leicestershire and Rutland.  The Sharnford specimen of 28th May 2018 is believed to be the first for our area (VC55).
