This is a barkfly with a reddish-brown or greyish-brown mottled appearance.

Found on a very wide range of deciduous and evergreen trees, most frequently on branches but occasionally on trunks. It can also be found on heather.
July to early October.
Widespread and quite common in Britain.
Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
