Length 5 to 6 mm. This is a picture winged fly with a shiny bulbous body and two strong dark 'shades' on each wing with one at the wing tip the other on the top edge.

May to August/September.
Feed on pollen from plants such as Hogweed and on small insects.
Fairly frequent and widespread in England and Wales.
