Green Field-speedwell - Veronica agrestis

Description

Low spreading, hairy plant. Flowers a pale whitish blue, quite small, 3 to 6 mm solitary, borne on long slender stalks. Calyx segments more rounded than in Common Field-speedwell. Capsule 2 lobed with parallel lobes (not diverging) sparsely glandular hairy.

Similar Species

Other speedwells, especially V persica which grows in similar habitats; V polita may also be found but is rare in VC55

ID guidance

Annual, flowers solitary in leaf-axils (i.e not in spikes or racemes) and usually with paler flowers than V persica.  Key difference is the capsules, which have parallel or slightly diverging apices. 

Recording advice

This is difficult to identify with confidence from a close-up photo of the flowers.  

The County Recorder has asked for a specimen of this plant to be retained for verification

Habitat

Often on well cultivated ground, such as gardens and allotments that have remained well kept over many years.

March to November.

Annual.

UK Status

Widespread in most of Britain, but not nearly as common as the similar V. persica.

VC55 Status

Occasional and possibly declining in Leicestershire and Rutland. In the 1979 Flora Survey of Leicestershire it was found in 83 of the 617 tetrads.

In the current Checklist (Jeeves, 2011) it is listed as Alien (archaeophyte); occasional
