St. Peters Churchyard

    Wildlife Highlights

The churchyard to the south of the Church makes a positive contribution to the setting of the church with some parts never having been built on.  It contains a number of large, mature Horse Chestnut, Lime, Turkey Oak and Sycamore trees. Yew trees, typical of many churchyards are also present as well as an extensive carpet of ground flora, particularly in the spring when an impressive display of primroses comes into flower.

Pellitory of the Wall, Wood Sedge and Deadly Nightshade have all been recorded previously - indicators of the churchyard's past and its long-established vegetation.

    Bioblitz image.JPG
A BioBlitz was held in May 2018 and identified over 300 species of plants and animals over the 24 hours.  The event confirmed that the site is an important area for pollinating insects with its abundant food sources and areas to shelter. To see a full list of the species found, click here.

The oldest building in the suburb of Belgrave, Leicester is St Peter’s church of which parts date back to the 12th century when the church was much smaller than the present building.

The church has been closed for approximately five years, but the churchyard is open to members of the public and to enable access to the Garden of Remembrance created for the internment of ashes of local families who have a general connection with the parish of St Peters.

Access is available at all reasonable times.
