Amphibians are dependent on water for breeding, though adults can and do spend much of their time on land. They have moist skin which must not dry out so amphibians need to avoid sun and are active at night. There are six native amphibians in Britain, three newts, one frog and two toads. All but the Natterjack Toad can be found in Leicestershire and Rutland.
