Cephus nigrinus

Description

This sawfly is the only Cephus with an all black abdomen. It has black femora with yellow tibia and tarsi. The costa is also yellow, particularly near to the body.

Habitat

Tends to favour woodland and other well wooded areas, but is attracted to yellow flowers such as buttercups.

When to see it

May and June.

UK Status

Widespread but infrequently recorded.

VC55 Status

Rare or under recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland. The Holwell record of 11.5.2017 is the first record for VC55.
