Gymnetron villosulum

Description

2.1 to 2.9mm.

The larvae of this small weevil feed within galls formed in the seed-capsules of Veronica species, particularly V. anagallis-aquatica (Blue Water-speedwell) and V. catenata (Pink Water-Speedwell), and also Veronica beccabunga (Brooklime) and Veronica scutellata.  The gall is a swollen ovary up to 8 x 5 mm causing a distinct enlargement of the flower.

UK Status

Notable B. Widespread but local in southern England. Rare or absent elsewhere.

Scarce or under-recorded. There wereonly 2 VC55 records for this species up to March 2015.
