Lophiostoma origani var. rubidum

Description

This fungus consists of black spheres, up to 0.5mm in diameter, embebbed in the herbaceous stem of the host, which partially break through to the surface as they mature. Spores are liberated through slot shaped ostioles. A pinkish red stain coats the surface of the host around the fruit bodies.

Recorded growing on a dead stem of Great Willowherb (Epilobium hirsutum).
