Description

There are several similar members of the Pearlwort family, but Sagina filicaulis usually has distinctive red margins to the sepals, excessively protruding fruit, and some of the sepals at right angles.

Annual, with all shoots producing flowers; leaves finely pointed; sepals in at least some flowers spreading ('patent') in fruit, and the outer sepals sub-obtuse to obtuse or hooded. 

Sagina apetala has sepals erect to erecto-patent in fruit, with the outer subacute to acute or acuminate.

Dry ground, sandy places, old walls and crevices.

Flowering April to August.

Annual.

UK Status

Status in Britain is difficult to determine as records seem to be rather confused.  It was previously regarded as a subspecies of Sagina apetala.  Stace (2019) 4th edition states ' . . probably commoner in man-made habitats than S apetala . . .'  .

VC55 Status

It was not recorded in the 1979 Flora survey of Leicestershire.

In the current checklist (Jeeves, 2011) it is listed as Native; current distribution and frequency uncertain
