Sulphur Knight - Tricholoma sulphureum


    Cap is sulphur yellow, often with reddish-brown or olive tints; convex, usually with a wavy margin, sometimes flattening or becoming slightly depressed, but retaining an umbo; matt; 3 to 8cm across. It used to be referred to as the Gas Works Mushroom because of its strong pungent odour.

    Identification difficulty

    In deciduous and mixed woods, usually with Oak or Beech.

    When to see it

    Late Summer to Autumn.

    UK Status

    Widespread but local in distribution.

    VC55 Status

    Occasional in Leicestershire and Rutland.
