Description

Hicks Lodge is a former coal mining site that have been totally transformed by landscape reclamation projects and it is now the home of the National Forest Cycle Centre. The site also includes Shellbrook Wood and Newfields Wood, and together these sites offer some of the most ecologically interesting habitats found within the Heart of the National Forest. The site includes a network of both cycling and walking trails, and has a lake with a birdwatching hide.

The cycling centre has a cafe and toilets.

Wildlife Highlights

The site includes several habitats, including dry heath, and supports a wide range of fungi, wildflowers and invertebrates. Common Lizards and Grass Snakes can be seen and the lake has produced a number of interesting bird records, including Jack Snipe.
