Hi,

Had this moth come to a light on Friday night.  Fairly drab and the only decent photo I got.  I thought it may be a Crescent but they are pretty scarce and the only other I could think was Common / Lesser Common Rustic Agg. as they are very similar.  I'm very new to this so any help would be appreciated.  North Melton Mowbray bordering fields.

Thanks

Jonathan

Hi,

I can see why you may have thought Crescent, but the shape of the reniform stigma is not quite right for that. I am sure it is just a Common Rustic agg. - very variable including these plain forms with white stigma. Crescent is not too unlikely though, it turns up in numbers at some sites and it does turn up in Leics. gardens occasionally.

Cheers,

Many thanks Mark, I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. I'm pleased that I'd narrowed it down enough to Common Rustic agg. to be honest. I've also learned that the kidney shaped markings are called reniform stigma!
