I have two pictures of what I would assume are the Hornet Hoverfly but they are different, is one male and the other female?

Two species
Your second image is indeed a Hornet Hoverfly (Volucella Zonaria). The first is a different but closely related species, the Pellucid Fly (Volucella pellucens). They are both females, you can tell this because the eyes of males touch on top of the head in these species.

These are two different hoverfly species. The first hoverfly photographed is Pellucid Fly (Volucella pellucens) and the second hoverfly photographed is Volucella zonaria (considered a mimic of the hornet).
