Comfrey Rust - Melampsorella symphyti
The primary hosts of the rust fungus Melampsorella symphyti are various members of the Boraginaceae including Common Comfrey and Russian Comfrey. There is some yellowing of the upper surface of affected leaves, but the underside may be completely covered with the yellow-orange uredinia.
The alternate aecial host is the Silver-fir, Abies. It is not considered to be a gall causer on either host.
The closely related Melampsorella caryophyllacearum also affects Silver-fir, causing Witches'-broom galls
Unless identified by a recognised expert, a photo is required. Please state the host plant on any records for this rust.
Widespread in Britain.
Status in Leicestershire and Rutland is difficult to determine due to lack of records.
