Description

One of the smaller craneflies with marbled dark and pale patches on wings, which are held in line with the body at rest.

Similar Species

Can be confused with Tipula rufina but this species has a clear dark stripe on the side of the thorax (on the pleura) which T. confusa lacks.

Woodland and gardens.

When to see it

A late flying species - September to November

Life History

Larvae live in moss in woods, gardens etc.

UK Status

Quite common and widespread in Britain.
